What is the Exhaust/Tailpipe all about?
The engine produces fumes from the combustion process called exhaust. These fumes exit through an exhaust manifold and enter the exhaust/tail pipe. The exhaust/tail pipe carries the exhaust fumes through the catalytic converter, through the muffler, and finally exiting the exhaust tip. Oxygen sensors that monitor emissions levels are screwed into exhaust pipe ports. The exhaust/tail pipe is exposed to corrosive gases and extreme temperatures that can exceed 800 °F. Over time and exposure, the exhaust/tail pipe can begin to rust through from the inside or outside, or the pipe can crack at any of the several flanges along the exhaust pipe.
Keep in mind:
- Noise ordinances in your county or city likely prohibit noise pollution from broken exhaust pipes.
- Exhaust fumes are toxic therefore inhaling exhaust should be avoided.
How it’s done:
- The faulty exhaust pipe section is identified and vehicle is put on jack stands
- The defective exhaust pipe section is removed
- The new exhaust pipe section is installed with new gaskets
- The engine is started and is checked for exhaust leaks
- The vehicle is removed from jack stands and road tested for proper operation
Our recommendation:
When the exhaust pipe cracks or a hole forms in the exhaust pipe, it’s time to replace it. Use a high quality stainless steel replacement exhaust pipe to ensure a long life and quality fitment.
What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Exhaust/Tailpipe?
- Excessive noise from the exhaust system
- Raw exhaust smell when the engine is running
- Hanging or dragging exhaust pipe under your vehicle
How important is this service?
Delaying the replacement of a broken or leaking exhaust/tailpipe can lead to the Check Engine light coming on, excessive irritating noise, premature oxygen sensor failure, and noxious fumes can enter your vehicle. Replace a leaking exhaust/tailpipe pipe as soon as possible. Our expert technicians can perform an exhaust/tailpipe system check to ensure everything is working properly. It pinpoints any problems that may occur with your exhaust system. If our technicians find a problem, they’ll let you know what they can do to fix it. We can curb any problem before it starts, so you won’t be left stranded.
